In a landmark moment for law enforcement in Rockland County, Deirdre Smith was sworn in as the Chief of Detectives for the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office on Monday morning. This appointment marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first female to hold this esteemed position in the County.
A graduate of Manhattan College, Chief Smith brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her journey in law enforcement commenced in 1993 with the NYPD, where she served for five years before joining the Suffern Police Department. Throughout her 22-year tenure with Suffern PD, she climbed the ranks, eventually retiring as a Sergeant. Notably, Chief Smith shattered barriers within the department, becoming its first female supervisor and earning recognition such as the Medal of Honor Award for Valor from the Rockland County PBA.
Law enforcement runs in Chief Smith’s blood, as she hails from a family with a rich history in the field. Her father, a retired Inspector from the NYPD, and her sister, who has served with the FBI for 25 years, have influenced her dedication to the profession.
Transitioning to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office in 2020, Chief Smith made history once again as the first female Confidential Investigator to the District Attorney. Her tenure there saw her involvement in numerous high-profile cases, demonstrating her expertise and commitment to justice.
Chief Smith steps into the shoes of Peter Walker, the former Chief of Detectives, who retired just last week after three decades in law enforcement. Her inauguration ceremony, capturing this historic moment, can be viewed through this link.
