Daniel Hyman Sworn In as Chief of Ramapo Police, Succeeding Retiring Chief Martin Reilly

In a ceremonial event on Thursday evening, Captain Daniel Hyman was officially sworn in as the new Chief of the Ramapo Police Department. Hyman will remain in his current position as Captain until June 14, taking over as Chief on June 15, following the retirement of the current Chief, Martin Reilly. Chief Reilly’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career that spans nearly four decades.

Daniel Hyman’s law enforcement journey began in July 1987 when he entered the NYPD academy. Initially assigned to a unit in the South Bronx, he later served in the 26th precinct in Harlem. In October 1989, Hyman joined the Ramapo Police Department, where he has held various roles, including Field Training Officer, Adopt-a-Cop, FBI Firearms Instructor, and Community Policing Officer.

Throughout his career in Ramapo, Hyman has been an active member of the community. He participated in the Rescuing Our Youth Coalition, aimed at addressing underage drinking and driving education. Hyman also co-managed the NYS Accreditation Program, helping Ramapo PD achieve initial accreditation status in 2004 and leading the first re-accreditation in 2009.

Hyman is a graduate of the prestigious Session 251 of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and the 2014 Leadership Rockland Program. He attended Advanced Counter-Terrorism Training in Israel in 2003 as part of a Rockland County Law Enforcement Contingent.

Rising through the ranks, Hyman was promoted to sergeant in 2003, where he managed the Emergency Communication Center. In 2010, he became a lieutenant, commanding a patrol squad and overseeing midnight patrols for many years. By 2017, Hyman was promoted to Administrative Lieutenant, becoming part of the Primary Command Staff. In 2019, he advanced to Operations Captain and, in 2021, became Chief of Staff Captain, the second in command of the Ramapo Police Department. In this role, he was responsible for the oversight and management of the primary command staff, community policing, budget preparation, internal affairs, and overall operations.

As Hyman takes on the role of Chief of Police, he shared his thoughts on this significant milestone. “I am deeply honored and humbled to step into this role. My commitment to the community and the department remains steadfast, and I look forward to continuing the legacy of excellence established by Chief Reilly,” Hyman told Monsey Scoop.

Retiring Ramapo Police Chief Martin Reilly spoke at the ceremony and expressed his gratitude to Daniel Hyman, saying, “I’d like to take this moment to express my gratitude to Danny. As second in command of our department, your support of me and our mission has been exceptional. Your insightful guidance, ability to anticipate challenges, and provide innovative solutions have contributed to making our department the outstanding law enforcement agency it is today. Your contributions have been invaluable in elevating our work to new heights. I look forward to watching you and your team bring our department to new levels. Thank you!”

Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht also shared his enthusiasm for Hyman’s new role with Monsey Scoop. “Chief Hyman’s extensive background and unwavering dedication to our community ensure that the Ramapo Police Department will continue to thrive under his leadership. We are fortunate to have him as our new Chief,” Specht stated.

The ceremony marks a new chapter for the Ramapo Police Department as it transitions under the capable leadership of Chief Daniel Hyman, ensuring continued commitment to safety and service for the community.
