County Executive Ed Day Declares January National Blood Donor Month in Rockland County

Rockland County Executive Ed Day has officially proclaimed January 2026 as National Blood Donor Month, recognizing the lifesaving impact of blood donors and the organizations that collect and distribute this vital resource. As part of the recognition, Day presented an honorary proclamation to the New York Blood Center, commending its continued commitment to maintaining a safe and reliable blood supply throughout Rockland County.

According to county officials, nearly 5,000 blood donations were collected at 129 New York Blood Center blood drives across Rockland County in 2025, marking a 16 percent increase over 2024.

“Blood donation is the greatest gift anyone can give, as it saves precious lives,” County Executive Day said. “We’re proud to honor New York Blood Center for their unwavering commitment to this cause and to the health and safety of our residents.”

The New York Blood Center supplies hospitals throughout the region with critical blood and platelet products used for surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma care, and emergencies. Officials note that winter months are especially challenging for blood banks due to weather disruptions, flu season, and holiday schedules—making January a key time to raise awareness and encourage donations.

“Thank you to Rockland County for recognizing the importance of blood donation during National Blood Donor Month and throughout the year,” said Jeannie Mascolino, Vice President of Blood Operations at the New York Blood Center. “A single blood donation can save up to three lives, and Rockland’s nearly 5,000 donations in 2025 are a testament to both county leadership and the extraordinary generosity of its residents.”

Nationwide, someone in the United States requires a blood transfusion every two seconds, underscoring the constant demand for donors.
