Congressman Mike Lawler is calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to take immediate action to address what he described as a growing economic crisis for small businesses in Stony Point, stemming from overlapping state-approved construction projects on Route 9W.
In a letter sent to the governor on September 18, Lawler urged Hochul to halt the concurrent work, reschedule either O&R’s or CHPE’s projects, and provide direct financial relief to affected businesses. He also pressed for greater state oversight and accountability to ensure such situations do not recur. Read the full letter here.
“Route 9W is the main commercial corridor for Stony Point’s small businesses and a key artery for commerce in North Rockland,” Lawler wrote. “Many of these businesses are being impacted 24 hours a day, at least six days a week, since CHPE works at night and O&R works during the day. With a massive loss of foot traffic due to the ongoing construction, these businesses have suffered significantly, with some reporting up to 75% revenue losses.”
According to a report by News12, businesses along the corridor could collectively face losses exceeding $10 million if relief measures are not implemented quickly.
