Congressman Mike Lawler Introduces Bill to Make September 11th a Federal Holiday

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) announced the introduction of the September 11 Day of Remembrance Act, legislation that would formally designate September 11th as a federal public holiday. The measure seeks to honor the thousands of lives lost in the terror attacks, the bravery of first responders, and the spirit of national unity that followed.

The bill amends Title 5 of the United States Code to establish September 11th, “Day of Remembrance,” as a legal public holiday, placing it alongside longstanding national observances such as Memorial Day and Independence Day.

“Every day, I meet families whose loved ones gave everything to save our neighbors on 9/11,” Congressman Lawler said. “So many of our brothers and sisters were lost on that fateful day, and even now, we continue to lose loved ones due to 9/11-related health issues. We must never forget the service, sacrifice, and bravery of everyday Americans in the face of such horrifying circumstances.”

Lawler emphasized that the designation would carry special meaning for his district. “In my district, nearly half of households have a cop, firefighter, or veteran living there. Almost 25 years on, it matters now more than ever to our communities that we have the chance to pause, to be home, and to be with our friends and families on this day of remembrance. By designating September 11th as a federal holiday, we ensure future generations take time to honor the lives lost and reflect on the values that unite us as Americans.”

The legislation has bipartisan backing, with original cosponsors including Reps. Jeff Van Drew (NJ-02), Tom Kean (NJ-07), Pat Ryan (NY-18), Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), George Latimer (NY-16), Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Nellie Pou (NJ-09), Cory Mills (FL-07), and Jeff Hurd (CO-03).

Congressman Lawler’s bill was originally introduced in the 118th Congress and in the New York State Assembly.
