Congressman Mike Lawler formally recognized Ramapo Police Chief Daniel Hyman on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for an extraordinary act of bravery that saved a life during a three-alarm house fire in Airmont.
Speaking before his colleagues in Congress, Lawler praised Chief Hyman for his courage and selfless action after the chief, while off duty, encountered a rapidly developing fire at a residence on Haskell Road. As previously reported by Monsey Scoop, Chief Hyman observed an occupant trapped on an upper floor of the burning home as heavy smoke poured from the structure.
Without hesitation, Chief Hyman secured a ladder and personally guided the trapped resident down from the upper floor to safety, rescuing the individual moments before conditions worsened. The fire ultimately displaced the family and required a large multi-agency emergency response.
Lawler noted that Chief Hyman’s actions reflect the highest ideals of public service, emphasizing that even while off duty, the chief acted instinctively to protect life. He also highlighted Chief Hyman’s decades of service with the Ramapo Police Department, where he has served since 1989.
The recognition on the House floor served as a national acknowledgment of local heroism, underscoring the bravery and dedication of first responders and law enforcement officers who place themselves in harm’s way to protect their communities.
