Congressman Mike Lawler, County Executive Ed Day Hold Press Conference Opposing Rockland “Immigration Protection Act”

Congressman Mike Lawler, Rockland County Executive Ed Day, local elected officials, members of the Rockland County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, law enforcement officials, and community leaders gathered at Clarkstown Town Hall on Monday afternoon to publicly announce their opposition to the proposed Immigration Protection Act currently before the Rockland County Legislature.

During the press conference, speakers warned that the legislation—introduced by County Legislator Beth Davidson—would significantly restrict cooperation between Rockland County agencies and federal immigration authorities, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Officials explained that the proposal would bar county employees and law enforcement from proactively cooperating with ICE, prohibit sharing information regarding an individual’s immigration status, and prevent law enforcement agencies from honoring federal immigration detainers. According to speakers, these provisions raise serious concerns about public safety, accountability, and effective policing.

Congressman Lawler and County Executive Day emphasized that Rockland County has long benefited from coordinated efforts among local, county, state, and federal law enforcement partners. They cautioned that limiting this cooperation could undermine the ability of police to keep communities safe and respond effectively to criminal activity.

Members of the Rockland County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association echoed those concerns, stating that the legislation would place unnecessary constraints on officers and interfere with established procedures that help protect residents across the county.

Community leaders in attendance also voiced opposition, urging legislators to reconsider the proposal and warning that its passage could have unintended consequences for public safety throughout Rockland County.

The Immigration Protection Act remains under consideration by the Rockland County Legislature.

After your terrible press conference last night, you sound now like a desperate looser, trying to get some attention, sorry you failed.

  2. It sad that following basic law of finding criminals and protecting our basic border policies would find issue with the local Rockland legislature. What is going on that they want to hide or protect; should we worry?
