Congressman Mike Lawler has challenged Democratic congressional nominee Cait Conley to six televised debates following her victory in the Democratic primary for New York’s 17th Congressional District.
In a statement released Monday night, Lawler congratulated Conley on securing the Democratic nomination while outlining several policy differences he expects to highlight during the general election campaign.
“We all commend Cait’s military service, but the people of the Hudson Valley don’t vote for resumes, they vote for results,” Lawler said. He argued that his bipartisan record in Congress and experience working across party lines distinguish him from his Democratic challenger.
Lawler announced that he is proposing six televised debates beginning shortly after the July 4 holiday. He said the debates would provide voters with an opportunity to hear direct discussions on a range of issues, including immigration, public safety, taxes, energy policy, and bipartisan governance.
The congressman also criticized Conley’s campaign and raised questions about her work with technology and artificial intelligence companies, while pledging to challenge her positions on immigration enforcement, law enforcement cooperation with federal authorities, tax policy, and New York State energy initiatives.
Lawler further emphasized his bipartisan credentials, noting that he has been recognized among the most bipartisan members of Congress. He contrasted that record with statements he attributed to Conley regarding national political divisions, arguing that such rhetoric is out of step with the politically competitive nature of the Hudson Valley district.
The challenge sets the stage for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched congressional races in the country. Conley’s campaign had not publicly responded to Lawler’s debate proposal as of Monday evening.
The general election for New York’s 17th Congressional District will take place in November.
He only wants to grandstand.
