Congressman Mike Lawler and Colleagues Meet with President Trump to Discuss SALT and Congestion Pricing

Congressman Mike Lawler announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he and his colleagues met with President Donald Trump on Saturday evening at Mar-a-Lago in Florida to address pressing issues impacting the nation and New York. The conversation centered on lifting the cap on State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions and halting congestion pricing in New York City.

The SALT deduction allows taxpayers who itemize their returns to deduct state and local taxes, including property taxes, from their federal taxable income. However, a $10,000 cap was imposed on these deductions in 2017 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This cap has disproportionately affected high-tax states like New York, significantly increasing federal tax liabilities for many middle- and upper-middle-income residents.

Congressman Lawler, representing New York’s 17th District which includes Rockland County, has been an outspoken advocate for restoring full SALT deductions. He has highlighted the financial strain the cap places on families in his district and across the state. Lawler has consistently called for bipartisan action to address this issue, arguing that the cap unfairly penalizes New Yorkers for their state’s tax policies.

During the meeting, President Trump reiterated his support for eliminating the SALT cap, aligning with Lawler and his colleagues’ ongoing efforts in Congress. The discussion also touched on the controversial congestion pricing plan in New York City, which has drawn criticism for imposing additional financial burdens on commuters.

“We will get it done,” Lawler declared in his post, expressing confidence that these critical issues will see progress with continued collaboration and advocacy.
