Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) is calling on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to maintain a local presence in Rockland County following the agency’s planned closure of its West Nyack facility later this year.
On Thursday, Lawler sent a letter to Acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent urging the agency to keep vital taxpayer services accessible to residents after the West Nyack office, located at 242 W. Nyack Road, shuts down when its lease expires in November 2025.
The office has long served as a critical resource for local taxpayers, recording nearly 1,000 in-person visits in Fiscal Year 2024 alone. Lawler said eliminating the location without an alternative would leave Rockland residents at a severe disadvantage.
“Closing this office without providing a suitable replacement will impose an undue burden on my constituents, many of whom rely on in-person services to resolve complex tax issues,” Lawler wrote. “Forcing them to travel farther distances—often without reliable access to transportation—adds unnecessary barriers to fulfilling their obligations as taxpayers.”
In his letter, Lawler urged the IRS to immediately fill the vacant position at the Taxpayer Assistance Center and to work quickly to establish a new office in Rockland County. He also proposed that the IRS consider sharing space with the Social Security Administration’s local office or explore other suitable locations to ensure uninterrupted taxpayer access.
The IRS has not yet announced plans for continued services in Rockland following the closure.
