Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) and Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano announced on Friday that in-person Social Security hearings will return to the Hudson Valley, with the West Nyack SSA Office set to begin hosting hearings for local residents. The move restores a critical service that had been lost earlier this year following the closure of the White Plains Hearing Office—the only such facility serving the region.
The decision follows months of advocacy by Congressman Lawler, who pushed to ensure that Hudson Valley residents would not lose convenient access to essential Social Security hearings.
“From the moment the Biden Administration announced the closure of the White Plains hearing office, I pledged to work tirelessly to find a solution for Hudson Valley residents,” said Congressman Mike Lawler. “I am proud of my work with Commissioner Bisignano and the Trump Administration to keep these vital services accessible here in the Hudson Valley while saving taxpayer dollars. Social Security has been a cornerstone of American life for 90 years, helping millions retire with dignity and providing vital assistance to those in need. I’ll always fight to protect and strengthen it so it works efficiently, accessibly, and fairly for the people who depend on it.”
The new hearing capability at the West Nyack office will allow residents to attend hearings locally rather than traveling to New York City or Albany, while utilizing existing infrastructure to minimize costs.
“SSA continues to provide Americans with the support they need and the customer service they deserve, and this new hearings space reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are,” said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. “By establishing a hearing office in the Hudson Valley, we’re making it easier for people to access and receive the services they rely on. I want to thank Congressman Lawler for his strong advocacy on behalf of Hudson Valley residents and all SSA employees who continue serving the American people even during the ongoing federal shutdown.”
Today’s announcement follows Congressman Lawler’s August celebration of the reopening of the renovated West Nyack Social Security Office—part of his broader effort to preserve and enhance Social Security access for Hudson Valley residents.
