Community Security Initiative Issues Alert Following Targeted Attack at Pro-Israel Event in Colorado; Rockland County Heightens Patrols Ahead of Shavuos

An apparent targeted attack took place earlier this evening in Boulder, Colorado, at a “Run For Their Lives” event—an initiative raising awareness for Israeli hostages held by Hamas. While details are still emerging, initial reports suggest the gathering was deliberately targeted due to its pro-Israel nature.

In response, the Community Security Initiative (CSI)—a joint program of UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York—has issued urgent guidance for institutions across the region, including Rockland County, where law enforcement agencies had already planned increased patrols for the upcoming Yom Tov Shavuos.

Local Jewish leaders are working closely with CSI and Rockland law enforcement to bolster security measures at Shuls, schools, and community centers, particularly those hosting large gatherings or holiday events in the coming weeks.

The Community Security Initiative recommends the following actions:

  1. Communicate with Law Enforcement and CSI:
Notify your local police precinct and CSI of all major upcoming events, especially those before June 30. Share event specifics—time, location, attendance—with CSI at csi_questions@csiny.org.
  2. Control Access and Screen Attendees:
Limit entry to verified guests through pre-registration and ID checks. Ensure entrances are locked and staffed with trained volunteers or CSS personnel.
  3. Harden the Perimeter:
Conduct pre-event security sweeps, enhance surveillance coverage, check lighting and locks, and consider physical deterrents such as bollards or parked vehicles to prevent vehicular threats.
  4. Establish an Emergency Plan:
Designate a security coordinator, draft clear procedures for active threats, and review shelter-in-place and evacuation protocols.
  5. Ensure Communication Capabilities:
Equip staff and volunteers with radios or phones for immediate coordination. Protect virtual components of events by avoiding public links and requiring passwords.
  6. Stay Alert and Report Suspicious Activity:
Monitor for unusual behavior or vehicles. Review surveillance regularly and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and CSI.
  7. Engage Community Partners:
Coordinate with local volunteer patrols such as Chaverim of Rockland, and communicate with neighboring institutions to align on safety strategies.

The Community Security Initiative and local authorities emphasize that there is no known specific threat to Rockland County at this time. However, they urge heightened vigilance and preparedness as communities gather to celebrate the holiday of Shavuos.
