On Wednesday, the Town of Clarkstown marked the 50th anniversary of the tragic death of New City Firefighter Kevin Landau, who lost his life in the line of duty on September 24, 1975.
At just 19 years old, Landau was an active volunteer with the New City Fire Department and aspired to one day join the New York City Fire Department. While responding to a call in 1975, he was killed, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to his community.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday at St. Augustine’s Church, attended by local leaders and officials, including staff representing Congressman Mike Lawler, Clarkstown Highway Superintendent Bob Milone, and Town Clerk Lauren Marie Wohl. Following the service, a wreath-laying ceremony took place, and new street signs were unveiled dedicating Maple Avenue, near the firehouse and Town Hall, as Kevin Landau Way in his honor.
Town officials expressed their gratitude to the New City Fire Department and the Landau family for allowing the community to come together to remember Kevin’s sacrifice and to pay tribute to his enduring legacy five decades later.
