Clarkstown Dedicates Congers Street In Memory Of Fallen Firefighter George O. Sandfield

The Town of Clarkstown and the Congers Fire Department on Saturday honored the memory of longtime firefighter George O. Sandfield with the dedication of New York Avenue at Butler Street in Congers.

Sandfield was a 44-year member of Alert Hook Ladder & Engine Co. No. 1 when he died on December 11, 1987. He suffered cardiac arrest while standing by at the firehouse and waiting for fire apparatus to return from an alarm.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, members of the Town Board, firefighters and community members gathered for Saturday’s dedication, nearly 39 years after Sandfield’s passing.

The street dedication will serve as a lasting tribute to Sandfield’s 44 years of dedicated service to the Congers Fire Department and the community.
