Clarkstown’s code enforcement efforts have received positive recognition following a countywide review conducted by the Rockland County Illegal Housing Task Force, Supervisor George Hoehmann and the Town Board announced.
The review gathered feedback from fire departments and fire service representatives across Rockland County about their experiences working with municipal building and code enforcement departments. According to the Town, fire departments serving Clarkstown consistently described the Town’s inspectors as responsive, proactive and effective, while highlighting strong working relationships with the Clarkstown Building Department.
The recognition comes after Clarkstown significantly expanded its code enforcement efforts earlier this year. In January, Hoehmann and the Town Board advanced a legislative package that increased penalties for code violations, established a dedicated Deputy Town Attorney position for code enforcement matters and authorized the hiring of three additional code enforcement officers.
The measures followed a record year for code enforcement fines in 2025 and were aimed at strengthening the Town’s ability to address serious and repeat violations.
Clarkstown has expanded its enforcement efforts over the past decade, including establishing a rental registry, banning short-term residential rentals and increasing transparency requirements for properties owned by LLCs. The Town has also taken enforcement action against illegal and unsafe housing conditions, including previously shutting down properties in New City that officials said were being used to house migrants in unsafe conditions.
“Clarkstown has the most robust code enforcement team in the Hudson Valley,” Hoehmann said on behalf of the Town Board. “I am grateful our efforts have been validated by the recent code enforcement review conducted by the Rockland County Illegal Housing Task Force. Code violators are not tolerated in Clarkstown. We will use the full extent of the law to protect our neighborhoods and punish bad actors.”
