On Thursday afternoon, Chaverim Of Rockland Search and Rescue teams, along with Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, responded to a medical emergency involving a family hiking on a trail near Rockland County.
The call initially came in for two people who had fainted while hiking. During a callback, one patient remained dizzy, weak and somewhat disoriented and was advised to stop hiking and remain in place until help arrived.
Chaverim Of Rockland Search and Rescue teams made their way to the family and assessed the patient. Due to her condition, along with the heat, humidity and approaching rain, responders determined that she was too weak to safely continue hiking on her own.
Members first assisted the younger children and other family members out of the wooded area before turning their attention to safely bringing the patient out.
The patient remained dizzy and lightheaded but declined ambulance transportation. Responders then coordinated a safe ride for her from the area after determining that she was not in a condition to drive herself.
The incident serves as a reminder that anyone experiencing weakness, dizziness or disorientation while hiking should stop, remain in a safe location and seek medical assistance rather than attempting to continue.
