Chaverim of Rockland Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to two separate hiker emergencies in Harriman State Park last week, highlighting once again the critical role the team plays in keeping local residents and visitors safe.
The first call came in on Sunday, August 10, when a group of adults and bochurim were hiking deep in the woods. One of the boys twisted his ankle and was unable to continue on his own. After initially trying to manage without help, the group soon realized the injury was more serious and contacted Chaverim for assistance. SAR members mobilized quickly, entering the woods with medical supplies and rescue equipment. The injured hiker received treatment on the scene, including splinting and cooling measures due to the hot weather. Chaverim’s specialized stretcher was then assembled, and the patient was carefully carried out of the woods. Upon exiting, he was transferred to Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County for further evaluation and care.
Just two days later, on Tuesday, August 12, Chaverim SAR was activated again for another hiking emergency. This time, two individuals had been hiking for several hours in extreme heat when they ran out of water. With temperatures in the 90s and high humidity, they became dehydrated, exhausted, and unable to continue. SAR teams responded and made contact with the hikers, who were found resting and struggling with heat-related symptoms. Members immediately provided water, Gatorade, electrolyte tablets, and salty snacks to replenish their energy. One of the hikers was so dehydrated he could not tolerate fluids, and he was treated with medication for nausea before finally being able to rehydrate and regain his strength. SAR members carried the pair’s belongings to ease their load, and both individuals were escorted safely out of the park.
The successful outcomes of both rescues were the result of strong teamwork and coordination. Alongside Chaverim SAR, Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, NYS Park Police, and NYS Forest Rangers were present and assisted in the operations.
These incidents serve as a clear reminder of the importance of proper preparation when hiking during the summer months—especially carrying sufficient water and recognizing the risks of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Thanks to the swift response of Chaverim SAR and the assisting agencies, both rescues were carried out successfully, and all individuals made it out safely without further injury.
