Cait Conley has secured the Democratic nomination in New York’s 17th Congressional District after defeating Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson and other candidates in Tuesday’s primary election.
Conley will now face Congressman Mike Lawler in November, setting up what is expected to be one of the most closely watched congressional races in the nation.
Lawler, who is seeking another term in Congress, enters the general election with strong support throughout the district and has emerged as one of the Republican Party’s most prominent elected officials in New York. Republicans view Lawler as a formidable incumbent, while Democrats continue to target the seat as one of their top pickup opportunities.
The race is expected to draw national attention and significant outside spending as both parties battle for control of one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts.
