Monsey Scoop regrets to inform you of the Petira of Rav Avrohom Yitzchok Juravel Z”L, a longtime Monsey resident and internationally recognized expert in the field of Kashrus, who was niftar following an illness at 74 years old.
For more than four decades, Rav Juravel dedicated himself to the world of Kashrus, becoming a respected resource for Rabbonim, Poskim, Mashgichim, Kashrus organizations and food manufacturers dealing with the increasingly complex realities of modern food production.
Rav Juravel Z”L served as Rabbinic Coordinator for Technical Services at OU Kosher, where his extensive knowledge of both Halacha and industrial food production made him a leading authority on complicated Kashrus matters. His work took him to manufacturing facilities across all 50 states and dozens of countries around the world.
His involvement in Kashrus continued a family legacy spanning generations. His father, Rav Yosef Eliezer Juravel, and grandfather, Rav Shmuel Zev Juravel, both served as Shochtim. Rav Juravel himself entered professional Kashrus work more than 40 years ago as a Mashgiach under Rav Yaakov Posen, Dayan of Khal Adas Yeshurun in Washington Heights, where he served for more than a decade.
Rav Juravel later held positions with the OK and the Badatz of the Eidah Hachareidis before joining the Orthodox Union, where he became an important figure in its worldwide Kashrus operations.
Throughout his career, Rav Juravel became particularly renowned for his ability to combine a deep understanding of Halacha with detailed knowledge of factory equipment, ingredients, piping systems, food chemistry and industrial production. His expertise allowed him to address complicated Kashrus questions arising from rapidly changing food-manufacturing technology.
Rav Juravel Z”L also devoted significant effort to sharing his knowledge with others, delivering numerous Shiurim on practical Kashrus and authoring the Sefer Midi D’Achilah, which addressed Halachic and technical issues encountered in contemporary food production.
He leaves behind his wife, Mrs. Rochel Juravel, and a distinguished family continuing his legacy.
The Levaya took place Sunday morning at Kehilas Zichron Yitzchok, 36 Pennington Way in New Hempstead.
