Assemblyman Wieder’s Legislation to Establish Community Preservation Fund Overwhelmingly Passes in Assembly

Assemblymember Aron Wieder (D-Spring Valley) announced that his bill to authorize the Town of Orangetown to establish a Community Preservation Fund (CPF) has passed the New York State Assembly (A-6097). The legislation was requested by the Orangetown Town Supervisor and the Town Board to support efforts to preserve the town’s community spaces.

“New York State’s landscapes and natural resources are invaluable, and we have a duty to safeguard them,” said Assemblymember Wieder. “As a member of the Assembly Committee on Local Governments, I am dedicated to supporting our towns’ diverse needs. This legislation enables a five-year Community Preservation Project Plan to facilitate locally developed initiatives that preserve land and recreational areas for future generations, enhancing the quality of life for all New Yorkers.”

The legislation allows the Town of Orangetown to establish a Community Preservation Fund through a CPF surcharge on real property transfers within the town, capped at three-fourths of one percent of the transfer value. The fund will be overseen by a non-compensated board composed of members with demonstrated preservation expertise.

Assemblymember Wieder expressed optimism about the bill’s potential impact, stating, “We look forward to Governor Hochul signing this bill into law, as it will provide significant benefits for Orangetown residents by preserving the town’s cherished community spaces.”
