Assemblyman Aron Wieder personally delivered a proclamation to the Piermont Fire Department two weeks ago, celebrating 175 years of dedicated volunteer service to the village.
Wieder praised the department’s deep roots in the community, noting how it began around 1832 with railroad workers protecting the New York and Erie Railroad, before formally organizing as the Piermont Fire Department in 1851. Since then, generations of local volunteers have served from village firehouses, starting with their first engines in 1868, always ready to protect their neighbors.
“These volunteers are more than just firefighters — they’re our friends and neighbors who answer the call day or night with incredible courage and heart,” Wieder said. “I’m truly grateful for their sacrifice and proud to honor them on this special milestone.”
Wieder also highlighted his co-sponsorship of legislation to boost the tax credit for volunteer first responders, which recently passed the Assembly. The bill would raise the state tax credit from $200 to $800 for eligible volunteers, and up to $1,600 for married couples filing jointly where both spouses qualify.

In the proclamation, Wieder officially recognized the department as a pillar of the community and thanked its members for their unwavering commitment to keeping Piermont safe.

Where was Assemblyman Aron Wieder when the firefighters of Spring Valley were grieving the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter Jared Lloyd?
For someone seeking reelection and claiming to support the volunteer fire service, it is troubling that he has yet to walk through the doors of the Spring Valley firehouses, offer condolences, recognize the sacrifice made by Jared Lloyd, or stand with the firefighters and family who continue to carry that loss every day.
Jared Lloyd did not die in theory. He died in the line of duty while answering the call to protect others. His sacrifice represents the very best of the volunteer fire service and should never be forgotten.
It is easy to deliver proclamations during celebrations and anniversaries. True leadership, however, is measured by showing up during tragedy, standing shoulder to shoulder with those who mourn, and honoring those who paid the ultimate price.
The firefighters of Spring Valley, and the memory of Jared Lloyd, deserve more than silence. They deserve recognition, respect, and support from every elected official who claims to represent this community.
Shame on those who can find time for ceremonies and photo opportunities but cannot find time to honor a fallen firefighter in their own backyard.

Let us never forget that Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Huested were killed due to egregious, selfish indifference. Let everyone remember too, that no one was held responsible for their deaths either, which was at a minimum, criminally negligent homicide.
