Concerned residents of Airmont are urging local officials to prioritize pedestrian safety along New County Road (CR 81) by installing sidewalks, citing the growing need for infrastructure improvements in their community.
In a petition addressed to Legislator Joel Friedman, residents highlighted the dangers faced by pedestrians on New County Road, particularly after its recent repaving. The petition includes signatures collected from residents on 14 nearby streets, including Laura Drive, Murray Drive, and Appleland Road.
“We are grateful for the recent repaving of New County Road,” the petition reads, “and we believe adding sidewalks would significantly enhance safety for our community.”
The push for sidewalks comes in light of Rockland County’s recent allocation of $30 million for sidewalk projects, announced by Legislator Aron Wieder. Residents expressed their support for the initiative and believe sidewalks on New County Road should be a key part of these improvements.
“Sidewalks along New County Road (CR 81) would be an important part of this initiative,” the petition adds, emphasizing the potential for increased safety and accessibility for pedestrians, including children, seniors, and commuters who use the road regularly.
The petitioners are hopeful that their efforts will prompt swift action from local officials to ensure the well-being of Airmont residents. Legislator Friedman and other county officials have yet to comment publicly on the petition.
