Airmont Native Matthew Audi Proposes Rail Trail Plan to Revitalize Unused Rail Line

A proposal to convert an abandoned rail line into a pedestrian and biking trail is gaining traction in Ramapo, with local officials considering its feasibility.

The proposed rail trail would span approximately 3.5 miles, starting in the Village of Airmont, running through Ramapo, and ending in the Village of Spring Valley. A map of the proposed route can be viewed here.

Advocates behind the project have launched a petition to gather community support, aiming to present it to the Town of Ramapo next month.

Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht has acknowledged the proposal and confirmed that the town is exploring its viability. State Sen. Bill Weber has also reviewed the plan and expressed interest in the potential benefits it could bring to pedestrian safety and the community.

Since the rail line is believed to be MTA property, any redevelopment plans would require approval from the transit authority. The MTA has indicated that it will review any formal petition or proposals related to the project.

With growing community support and local officials evaluating the idea, the project’s future will depend on feasibility assessments and further discussions with the MTA.
