Air Quality Alert Issued for Rockland County and Surrounding Areas Due to New Jersey Wildfire Smoke

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services has issued an air quality alert affecting Rockland County, all five New York City boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester County. The alert follows the spread of smoke from a massive wildfire in New Jersey that has now grown to 13,250 acres, making it one of the largest in decades.

Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have surpassed 100, posing health risks for sensitive groups, including children, seniors, and individuals with heart or lung conditions.

Health officials are advising residents to limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and keep windows closed where possible to reduce exposure to the smoke.

As of this morning, the wildfire is reported to be 50 percent contained, with 12 structures still under threat.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and monitor local air quality updates at AirNow.gov.
