A Message from Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael B. Specht: Prioritizing Road and Pedestrian Safety

As the shortened days of winter are here, I wanted to take a moment to discuss an issue that is vital to our community: road and pedestrian safety across the Town of Ramapo.

Over the past two years, we have invested significant resources to enhance our town’s road and safety infrastructure. We secured an $18 million bond to construct many miles of sidewalks, and this project is ongoing. Through advocacy with our government partners, we’ve seen tangible results. Congressman Mike Lawler successfully obtained $8 million in federal grants for sidewalks, with $3 million allocated specifically to the unincorporated areas of our town. Additionally, the County of Rockland has announced significant funds for sidewalks along our county roads. In recent years, the State of New York invested millions to construct sidewalks along Route 59, extending from Remsen to Spring Valley at the Atrium Plaza.

To further enhance safety, we have strategically installed crosswalks, turning lanes, traffic lights, and stop signs at high-traffic intersections to reduce Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs). We have added over 1,500 new street lights, improving visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. Moreover, we are in the planning stages of widening certain roads and adding shoulders.

Beyond these permanent infrastructural improvements, my administration has implemented various initiatives to promote safety. We have distributed thousands of safety reflectors, increased police presence at high-risk locations, engaged with schools to discuss safety measures, and issued regular reminders to the public about road-sharing responsibilities through print and online media. Before the new school year, we hosted a safety workshop for school administrators and bus drivers.

Despite our efforts, MVAs still occur within our town, some with tragic outcomes. While no words can heal the pain of losing a loved one or enduring life-altering injuries, we remain committed to doing everything in our power to enhance safety. This means continuing our current initiatives and encouraging everyone—motorists, parents, and educators—to stay vigilant and mindful of road dangers and to teach our children about road safety.

As we approach winter, I wish everyone a season of safety and wellbeing. If you have any concerns or issues that need my attention, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email at supervisor@ramapo.org. I will do my utmost to address them.

  1. This massive over building that our once beautiful neighborhood has seen is now causing injury and R”L death on a daily basis. All the sidewalks in the world won’t help. Kids riding scooters and the hitchhiking needs to stop. The blatant disregard for basic traffic safety is also a huge new problem. Nothing else will stop these tragedies from occurring. Yes, I have no problem posting my name.

  2. Sidewalks mostly a waste of so much $$. Cars park on them all the time; garbage cans and what not obstructs them, and no one cares! No more the Monsey we grew up in. Its a new generation that wants to live with trash, traffic.

  3. @Jacob Well said can’t improve on that but you can’t put the genie back in the bottle. As I have said before money can give sight to the blind and that’s just what made the mess you speak of small minded quick buck the hell with my neighbor.
