A Century of Service: Celebrating Chief Al Magnatta’s 100th Birthday, WWII Heroism, and Firefighting Legacy

Yesterday, the Congers Fire Department and the wider Rockland County community came together to honor an extraordinary milestone: the 100th birthday of Al Magnatta, a true icon of courage and service.

Born in 1924, Al’s life is a shining example of heroism and dedication. On March 4, 1946, at just 21 years old, he joined the Congers Fire Department after returning home from service in the U.S. Army’s 8th Air Force Division during World War II. Stationed in England from 1943 to 1945, Al flew 25 missions as a B-17 aerial gunner, showcasing remarkable bravery under fire.

Upon his return, Al committed his life to protecting his community. Rising quickly through the ranks, he served as Chief of the Congers Fire Department from 1960 to 1962. That same year, he was appointed Rockland County Deputy Fire Coordinator, a position he held until 2020, setting the record as the longest-serving Deputy Fire Coordinator in Rockland County history.

Last week, on January 22, Congressman Mike Lawler addressed the United States House of Representatives to honor Al Magnatta’s incredible service to the Congers community. He highlighted Al’s upcoming 100th birthday and praised his legacy as a World War II veteran and devoted firefighter.

On January 26, Congressman Lawler took part in celebrating Al’s milestone in person. Joining Al and the Congers community, the Congressman stated: “Earlier this week, I had the chance to honor Al Magnatta on the House Floor. Today, I joined him and the Congers community to celebrate his 100th birthday. This WWII veteran has also served almost 80 years in the Congers Fire Department. He is a living legend. Thank you, Al, for your service.”

Throughout his 79 years of service, Al has shaped the region’s fire safety standards and emergency response capabilities. His work includes efforts on the False Alarm and UL Committees, as well as his roles as Fire Instructor, Administrative Assistant to the County Fire Coordinator, and Fire Liaison during emergencies like the 1974 freight train fire—a grueling 80-hour operation that tested the limits of emergency response teams.

In 2005, Al had the honor of serving as the Grand Marshal of the 93rd Annual Rockland County Volunteer Fireman’s Parade, proudly hosted by his home department in Congers. Today, he continues to serve as the department’s oldest active member, inspiring countless firefighters and community members with his unwavering dedication.

Al Magnatta’s life is a testament to selflessness, courage, and resilience. As we celebrate his centennial, we honor not only his remarkable personal milestone but also his unparalleled contributions to our community.
