17th District Showdown: Lawler vs. Jones is a Key Battle for Control of Congress

As the 2024 election approaches, voters in New York’s 17th Congressional District are set to play a pivotal role in deciding party controls the U.S. House. Republican incumbent Mike Lawler, who narrowly won the seat in 2022, faces a challenge from former Democratic Congressman Mondaire Jones in a race that has drawn national attention.

Lawler’s district, which includes affluent suburbs north of New York City and is home to political figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton and George Soros, has become a battleground. While Donald Trump lost the district to Joe Biden by 10 percentage points in 2020, Lawler managed to unseat longtime Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney two years later, reflecting the area’s openness to moderate Republican candidates.

The current race is emblematic of the broader fight for control of Congress in districts surrounding New York City, where Republicans have often performed well, but Trump has struggled. In 2022, many of these districts flipped to the GOP amid concerns about rising crime rates. But with crime rates now falling and Trump leading the Republican ticket, Democrats see an opportunity to reclaim ground.

The dynamics playing out in Lawler’s district mirror other close races in the region. On Long Island, Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito is fighting to hold onto his seat in a district that Biden won by 15 points. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. faces a competitive race against Democrat Sue Altman in a district that includes Trump’s Bedminster golf club.

With Trump back on the ballot, these races could hinge on how voters balance their views of the former president with their opinions of local candidates. In New York’s 17th District, Lawler and Jones are both vying for the support of moderate voters who may be turned off by the extremism they see in national politics.

As the election draws closer, the outcome in these closely watched districts could determine whether Republicans maintain control of the House or whether Democrats stage a comeback in a region that has been anything but predictable in recent years.

  1. If anyone plans on voting for Mondaire Jones they should just realize what they are doing. The illegal immigrants are going to flood Rockland County . Take over the schools, crime will skyrocket, our taxes will shoot up, parks will become unsafe, children will be offered fentanyl … etc. PLEASE VOTE ONLY REPUBLICAN. MIKE LAWLER AND BILL WEBER. They have been fighting to keep Rockland county safe from what has ruined NYC. Also keep in mind that Republicans are fighting congestion pricing. Another cash grab. Democrats have stolen enough of our money. TRUMP- LAWLER- WEBER
