Chaos erupted at the Spring Valley Police Department Friday when controversial Mayor Alan Simon put his hands on Police Chief Richard Oleszczuk in a shocking, physical attempt to remove him from the building — all because the chief refused to carry out the mayor’s outrageous and possibly illegal demands.
Multiple witnesses filed complaints describing the mayor’s behavior as “erratic” and “unlawful,” claiming he physically and forcibly placed both hands on the chief in an attempt to eject him from the department. Sources inside Village Hall tell Monsey Scoop the mayor was furious over the Union road construction project approved by the Village Board — a project Simon opposed. In a fit of rage, he ordered the chief to arrest the workers and impound their vehicles. When Chief Oleszczuk refused to abuse his authority, the mayor snapped.
Simon then attempted to unilaterally “suspend” the chief — a move legal experts say he has zero power to make. By Saturday, Chief Oleszczuk was back on the job, effectively ignoring the mayor’s baseless declaration.
This explosive confrontation is just the latest in a long line of scandals surrounding Mayor Simon, whose tenure has been plagued by power grabs, public meltdowns, and personnel firings. In September 2023, he unsuccessfully tried to push out the very same police chief for refusing to fire a school officer. In July 2024, he abruptly fired the village treasurer, who later resigned in August, citing a hostile work environment.
Despite declaring in February 2025 that he would not seek re-election, Simon continues to wreak havoc in the final stretch of his term.
Calls are growing for immediate action by state and local officials to reign in the mayor’s unchecked behavior before another crisis erupts. Village officials are said to be reviewing the incident — but for now, Spring Valley is once again gripped by political mayhem and a mayor seemingly untethered from the rule of law.
